| Music for the imposition of Ashes is as usual, the heart rending setting of psalm 51, Miserere Mei, by Allegri. Written for the Sistine Chapel, a tradition of enhancing the soprano lines with soaring 'ablimente' drew crowds of listeners. The penalty for taking a copy of the music out of the Sistine Chapel was excommunication. This was lifted when Mozart (and later Mendelssohn) were able to write out the music from memory after hearing it performed just once. |
